2024 CSI Swinburne scholarship recipient, Bianca Stern, is driving change at All Things Equal, a café committed to bridging the gap between people with disabilities and the wider community. Recent experiences during the pandemic, bushfires and floods have shown that organisations who make accessible information for people with disability are not always well-resourced to do so... Improvements are critical as climate change is making extreme weather events more common and more intense, and the impact of the issue has been highlighted by the findings of the #DisabilityRoyalCommission and by disability advocacy organisations. New CSI UNSW-led research from Dr Ariella Meltzer, Emma Barnes and Ayah Wehbe, in partnership with ℹ️ IDEAS Disability Info and funded by UNSW Disability Innovation Institute explores:    🔸 What information accessibility means in practice 🔸 The experience of organisations who make accessible information during the pandemic, bushfires and floods 🔸 The facilitators and barriers these organisations currently face 🔸 Resourcing/policy changes required to ensure quality provision of accessible information for people with disability during future public health crises and disaster events   💬 Lead author, Dr Ariella Meltzer says “Making accessible crisis information is difficult, because there is often a high volume of information that needs to be released, specialised medical and safety information is involved, frequent changes are made to the information that needs to be conveyed, and the work is required at speed..."   "Our report makes some key recommendations which include explicit legal requirements and better resourcing, which we hope can help contribute to improvements in the amount and quality of #AccessibleInformation available to people with disability in emergencies” #Disability #SocialImpact #PublicHealth

In this three-year study, the Centre for Social Impact is inviting 200 for-purpose organisations to join us annually in shaping the future of the nation's #socialeconomy. In his research, CSI UWA's Dr James Herbert explores cross-agency collaboration in responses to #childabuse. He is currently investigating how to address barriers to therapy engagement for children post-disclosure, including the institutional barriers that impact effective #collaboration. How do we move to an outcome where #homelessness is rare, brief and non-reoccurring? We need to first focus on #prevention...   Speaking at the Homelessness NSW Conference recently, Professor Paul Flatau, Director of CSI UWA, presented a new project in partnership with Mission Australia. To support an #endtohomelessness, they've begun work developing an evidence-based homelessness solutions model and related resource allocation model for Australia.   Based around the pillars of prevention, housing with support, and crisis support, the model uncovers specific programs with robust outcomes evidence, and strong investment and cost offset data.
